1. Find out the children’s current reading skills and behaviors using the Record of Reading Behavior assessment tool.
2. Group children with similar learning needs (4 to 6 children in a group is ideal for most students).
3. Select a pair of books at the appropriate reading level for the children in the group, taking into account the children’s learning needs and interests.
4. Decide which book you will teach first.
5. Conduct the reading lesson with the children (supportive Lesson Plans are provided for each pair of books.)
6. During the lesson, assess children’s reading informally. The Lesson Plans provide assessment points.
7. Have the children complete activities related to the specific book. (see Lesson Plans for an extensive list of possible activities)
8. Teach the second book in the same way.
9. Have children work through the “talking about the pair” activities to synthesize the ideas about the topic presented in each book.
10. Repeat with other books from the level or move on to a more challenging level according to student’s learning needs.
